Apex Clean Energy Partners with Maine-based Reed & Reed for Downeast Wind Construction

Washington County, ME – November 20, 2023 – Apex Clean Energy is pleased to announce the selection of Reed & Reed as the balance of plant (BOP) contractor for the construction of Downeast Wind. In this crucial role, Reed & Reed will oversee all subcontractors, ensuring the project’s success in terms of safety, schedule, and overall execution.

The Downeast Wind team is dedicated to supporting Maine’s economy by collaborating with local contractors and workers. Key partnerships include:

  • Reed & Reed (Woolwich, ME): Serving as the general contractor and BOP contractor, Reed & Reed will manage construction subcontractors
  • Sargent (Orono, ME): Contracted for civil work, including roads and general construction
  • Comprehensive Land Tech (China, ME): Providing survey work for Downeast Wind, this Maine-owned and -operated company specializes in commercial land clearing
  • Owen J. Folsom, Inc. (Old Town, ME): Supplying concrete materials for wind turbine foundations from its plant in Hancock, ME

Local subcontractors interested in project work are encouraged to sign up for the project’s local vendor program

During peak construction, the Downeast Wind team anticipates around 300 workers on-site, with over 80% sourced locally from Maine.

Safety is paramount at Downeast Wind; following this value, the project’s mapping system is integrated with local authorities, including the sheriff’s office, the 911 communication office, the local fire department, local ambulance services, and LifeFlight. Five emergency landing zones have been established to ensure swift response and aid recovery in the rare event of an on-site emergency.

The project is expected to reach commercial operation in early 2025, generating 126 MW of clean energy—enough to power the equivalent of more than 37,000 average homes per year.

Downeast Wind is a significant step toward Maine’s sustainable energy future. The project will also be a long-term revenue source for local governments through locally approved tax increment financing (TIF) and community benefit agreements totaling nearly $20 million. Landowners hosting wind facilities will receive annual lease payments, injecting close to $30 million into Washington County’s economy over the projected 30-year lifespan of the wind farm.
